  1. Kidney Transplantation: A Cure to End-Stage Renal Failure Summary: Renal Transplantation or more popularly Kidney Transplantation is done on people with severe kidney failure. The procedure is conducted to replace the affected kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. This helps in restoring the normal function of the Kidney. It is a surgical procedure and can be conducted only when the donor kidney matches with the recipient kidney. Once the normal function is restored, dialysis is not required. The kidneys help to filter our blood and form urine. In case of kidney failure, this function has to be performed with the help of dialysis or kidney transplant i.e., renal transplantation. What is a kidney transplant? In a kidney transplant, a healthy kidney is surgically transferred from one person to another who has little or no kidney function. The kidney is transplanted if the donor’s kidney is a match to the recipient’s. Once the transplanted kidney starts working, the person should no longer need dialysis. After a transplant, you will have to take anti-rejection medications to keep your body from rejecting the organ. Who can get a kidney transplant? A kidney transplant can be performed on people of all ages. Every candidate will undergo full medical and psychosocial evaluations before being considered as a donor or recipient for a kidney transplant, which will help eliminate any problems before the transplant. Types of donor Cadaver donor: A cadaver donor is a deceased donor whose family has given permission for organ donation. You may have to be on a waiting list to receive a deceased donor’s kidney.

  2. Living donor: A living donor is a person related or unrelated to the recipient, who donates their one kidney. In general, the donor must be: Healthy Not have any disease, infection, or injury to the kidney Should be of a compatible or same blood type Should be willing to donate their kidney without any coercion Risks As kidney transplant is a major surgical procedure, it comes with certain potential risks. Short- term risks include blood clots and infection. Long-term risks are usually due to anti-rejection medications, diabetes or infections. Therefore, people who have undergone a kidney transplant need to go for regular check-ups for the rest of their life. Post-transplant life A transplanted kidney can last from 1 to 10 years depending on a number of factors like age, how well the kidney of the donor is matched, and the health of the person who received the kidney. After a kidney transplant, having a healthy lifestyle is extremely important. You must stop smoking completely, lose weight if you are obese, eat a heart-healthy diet, and take precautions to avoid developing infections. Our team of experts at MedTravels can guide you by helping you choose the best doctor and hospital for kidney transplant based on your preferences and requirements.
