  1. Contrasting No. 331 East 39th Street with Chrysler Building and Daily News building. By: Jasmine Bell 5th Period

  2. Berenice Abbott was born in Springfield, Ohio on July 17,1898. She attended Ohio State University, but left before she got a degree in 1918. She moved to New Year after she drpped out of college and she became interested in theater and sculpture. She went to Europe in 1921 to study sculpture. She had her first exhibition in1926 in Germany, shortly after this she opened up her own studio in Paris. That next year she visited New York, and saw its photography potential and closed her studio in Paris. In 1935, Abbott was hired by the Federal Art Project (FAP) as a project supervisor for her "Changing New York" project. By the time she resigned from the FAP, in 1939, she had produced 305 photographs that were then deposited at the Museum of the City of New York. Berenice Abbott died in Monson, Maine on December 9, 1991. Artist Biography

  3. As you can see, the photograph is pretty simple, as of what’s in it. It only has two main focuses, and there are no people in it. • The picture contrasts this huge building, to this tiny building. It doesn’t really shed light on the fact that this picture was taken during the depression. In fact, if I did not know any better, I would think that this is just a picture of somewhere Houston. But it’s just in black and white because for the camera settings. • This is a simple picture. • I did miss one thing though, in the picture the Daily news Building is actual hidden by the little brown building. It is almost just as massive as the Chrysler Building. Both have the same Art Deco style of Architecture on them. Visual Analysis

  4. This picture was taken in 1938. At the time the Chrysler Building was the 2nd largest builing in New York, right after The Empire State Building. When this building was first made, the actual company that owned it couldn’t pay for it. So the owner of the company paid for the building, just so his kids could inherit it. I thought this was relevant because during the Great Depression a lot of companies couldn’t pay their own debts. • Then the other Building mentioned in the title of the piece, The Daily News Building, is a little smaller than The Chrysler Building. This Building was known for its news paper, and Superman’s normal job. In the comics of course. Both of these buildings showed up in pop culture from the 30’s to the 50’s. Historical Context

  5. The circle shows The Daily News Building.

  6. Abbott’s Significance of this piece was to capture the distinctions between both of the buildings. Although the style of achitecture used was the same, each building had its own uniqueness. For instance, the Daily News Building was considered to be the first skyscraper without a crown point at the top. While The Chrysler Building has a huge lighting rod sitting on its crown.
