  17. Why not in color?

  18. Here in these Photography classes at VVC we work to move from snapshots to photographs.

  19. We will focus on the elements that will improve your photography using a point-and-shoot camera, a cellphone, film, to full frame digital cameras costing thousands of dollars.

  20. Tones, not color • Because we have no colors in black and white photography everything is represented as white or tones of gray and black.

  21. We control what goes onto the film.

  22. You might find that you don’t need to buy a Canon 1D-x or Nikon D3x, both costing near $7,000 before you even buy one lens

  23. Student responsibility • 2 key dates. • Sept. 8 – last day for you to drop without a “W” • Oct. 11 – last day to drop with a “W” • Oct. 12 – FIRST day to drop with an “F” • 2 absences and dropped from class on your third absence • Unless other arrangements made, I will drop you. Missed class or lab is the same. Leaving early from the lab is an absence. • Had 2 students that turned in work, then never showed again. Could have dropped, but took an “F”. Keep me informed.

  24. I will take attendance each class session. • Contact for emergency • 15 min. late is an absence • Attendance will be taken after any break • Being in the darkroom during a lecture is an absence • On lab days I will check off attendance until near the end of the period.

  25. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated • No phones, iPod’s, ear buds in class • No food & drink in darkroom • I taught junior high my first 8 years of teaching and mostly 9th graders my last 10 years. I don’t ever want to do that again. However, I’ve been in college classrooms, as a student, where it would be difficult to tell the difference from the junior high and the junior college except by physical appearance.

  26. Originality • Each student is required to take their own photographs, develop and print their own film. You may have help. • Work from a previous class not accepted • Only photos from Spring 2013 semester • Copying will cause the student to be dropped with a grade of “F” • Unusual situation where a “special” relationship exits. Share camera but not the film. You must develop your own and do your own prints. No half and half.

  27. Can I turn in work late?Glad you asked • Assignment not turned in on time has until next assignment due w/10% reduction in grade • Re-submits can be turned in until 2 weeks before the end of semester. Without penalty! • Key is to get something gradable in on time! • See your syllabus for exact dates

  28. Assignments • Each photo assignment requires two 8x10 prints with the exception of the final assignment • When to photograph.

  29. Assignments 45% of grade • Texture • Space • Line • Classic Portraiture • Series

  30. Participation during critique and lecture • Quiz on each chapter • Final exam • Art show • Almost half your grade are the print assignments • Different from exercises.

  31. Exercises 15% of grade • Photogram • Learn to use the darkroom • F stop, shutter speed • Variable contrast • Dodging and burning

  32. Art show 10% • Two of your best prints will be matted and hung in our classroom for the show

  33. Quizzes 10% • 4 quizzes • See syllabus for reading • Each quiz is only 2.5% of your grade

  34. Final Exam 10% • Given on the last day of class. No make up & not given early • comprehensive

  35. Participation 10% • Each assignment turned in on time • Each assignment is critiqued in class • Following directions • You actively participate in the class critiques.
