UW ADVANCE Objectives • Conduct research on issues important to UW women faculty in science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) • Undertake institutional transformation to enhance the environment for women faculty in SEM • Support participation by and advancement of women in SEM • Increase the numbers of women in leadership positions in SEM • Focus on the diversity among women in SEM and design programs with this diversity in mind

  7. The Background • At UW, our women are promoted to Associate Professor at similar rates as men • At UW, our women are promoted to Professor at similar rates to men • Anecdotally, some women associate professors feel that their talents are not valued

Leadership Workshop, Mentoring for Promotion to Full Professor • David Notkin, Chair of CSE, suggests: • Giving seed money for risky new research (TSP) • Using sabbatical as springboard to promotion • Using “formerly stuck” professors as mentors to “stuck professors” • Encouraging a focus on education for a while

  13. Professional Development Consultants • Former College P&T committee members • Available to women faculty to discuss CV and/or professional development plans • Women must be encouraged to visit them
