Our Apprenticeships Recruitment Timeframe • 17thJune Generic advert (National Apprenticeship website) • 4th July Careers fair (Leeds Town Hall) • 15th July 2x Band 1 posts released • 17th July Final approval from Head of MPE & HR • 18th July NHS Jobs advert • 22nd July NHS Jobs advert closed early (120 applicants) • 19th August Assessment Day (20 applicants) • 20th August Interviews (10 applicants) • 21st August HR Pre-employment Appointment, OH & e-DBS • 22nd August References received • 6th September OH & e-DBS clearance • 9th September FE College start date • 11th September Contracts Issued • 16th September Trust start date – induction

My apprenticeship experience so far • What I have learned • Topped up electrical knowledge • Built basic understanding of computers and networking • Used various mechanical machinery such as Lathes and Milling machines • Health & Safety aspects • People I have met • Supportive • Kind • Honest • Helpful • Future Prospects • Further Study • Complete BTEC Level 3 Electrical Engineering • HNC & HND/ Foundation Degree • IPEM Training scheme ( Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) • Full Degree • Career • Hope to stay with the NHS • Progress further up the ranks

  12. Summary • Applied for the apprenticeship, correct route for me • Offered a place • Begun my introductions of health and safety, different departments and teams • Begun training to become a qualified Clinical Technician • Qualify further • Become key element in the NHS

Expected Costs • Expected £72k for a 4 Year Engineering Apprenticeship(Hogarth & Hasluck paper, Institute of Employment Research, Warwick university, 2003) • Assuming over 4 years: 60% of time learning 40% of time contributing at Band 4 level • Training costs picked up by Education Y&H • Education Y&H incentive payment £6.5k • LTHT insisted we employ at AfC Band (Band 1), some Trust do not!

Lessons Learnt • Some managers and scientists don’t understand apprenticeships, unexpected enthusiasm from others! • Best to Advertise - School February ½ term weekfor September start date • Assessment day vital – Applications are all very similar (note: 25% female applications in Engineering) • Wait for 100 applications per post – (we closed slightly too soon) • 3 classes of applicant: • School leaver • Career change • University fall back
