Force and Newton’s Laws

Force and Newton’s Laws. Forces. A force is a push or pull. Examples include pulling a wagon, throwing a ball, and opening a door. A combination of forces acting on an object is the net force . Balanced forces do not cause a change in the motion of an object.

  1. Force and Newton’s Laws

  2. Forces • A force is a push or pull. Examples include pulling a wagon, throwing a ball, and opening a door. • A combination of forces acting on an object is the net force. • Balanced forces do not cause a change in the motion of an object. • Unbalanced forces do cause a change in an objects motion.

  3. What kind of forces?

  4. Newton’s First Law of Motion • An object at rest stays at rest unless an unbalanced force acts on it and causes it to move. • If the net force acting on an object is zero, the object remains at rest, or if the object is already moving, it continues to move in a straight line with constant speed.

  5. Example of the First Law

  6. Friction • Friction is the force that acts to resist sliding between two forces. This force can bring everything to a stop. • Types of friction include static friction, sliding friction, rolling friction, and fluid friction. • On your paper, write two examples of each.

  7. Newton’s Second Law of Motion • An object acted on by a force will accelerate in the direction of the force. • Acceleration= net force/mass • Force is measured in Newtons (N)

  8. Second Law

  9. Gravity • The force of gravity exists between any two objects that have mass. It is the attraction between any two objects. • Weight is the gravitational force on an object and is a measurement that depends on the mass of the object and the location.

  10. Examples of Gravity

  11. Using Newton’s Second Law • This shows how to calculate acceleration involved in speeding up, slowing down, and turning. • Acceleration= Force/Mass • Complete Applying Math on p. 481 in your notebook.

  12. Air Resistance • Air resistance is a form of friction that can slow down an object moving in the air. • Air resistance is a force that gets larger as the object speeds up. • It also depends on the shape of the object.

  13. Example

  14. Newton’s Third Law • Forces act in equal and opposite pairs in the Third Law. • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. • Write down 2 examples in your notebook.

  15. Third Law

  16. Weightlessness • This is the condition that occurs in free fall when the weight of an object seems to be zero.
