  2. Why did I chose this song? One of my favorite songs & bands Familiarity Multiple Interpretations and Meanings

  3. Who is the speaker? The speaker is a man who was once a king or official with power but lost it all due to his actions or circumstances. He seems to be reflecting due to the frequent use of past tense. Some people pinpoint the speaker to a specific person in history such as King Louis XVI or Napoléon.

  4. Lyric Analysis • Live life to the fullest and don’t take it for granted/ You don’t know what you’ve got until it is gone 2. Absolute power corrupts 3. Personal Struggles (public appeal) • Stating that kings go through the same troubles as everybody else • Song was inspired by Frida Kahlo’s painting “Viva la Vida” after her accident

  5. I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemies’ eyes Listen as the crowd would sing “Now the old king is dead, long live the king!” One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand I hear Jerusalem bells ringing Roman cavalry choirs singing Be my mirror my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can’t explain Once you go there was never Never an honest word But that was when I ruled the world

  6. It was the wicked and wild windBlew down the doors to let me inShattered windows and the sound of drumsPeople couldn't believe what I'd becomeRevolutionaries waitFor my head on a silver plateJust a puppet on a lonely stringOh, who would ever wanna be king?I hear Jerusalem bells are ringingRoman Cavalry choirs are singingBe my mirror, my sword and shieldMy missionaries in a foreign fieldFor some reason I can't explainI know Saint Peter won't call my nameNever an honest wordBut that was when I ruled the world

  7. Metaphor • (n.)- 1. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. 2. A thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, esp. something abstract

  8. Repetition • (n.)- Repeating a word, phrase, line, or stanza multiple times in a literary work • Gives continuity • Emphasizes a thought through reiteration
