  2. Main Info on Diphtheria Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects mainly the throat and the nose. The symptoms are a bad sore throat, a slight fever, and swollen neck glands. The toxin in the bacteria causes a thick coating in the throat or airways which leads to breathing problems. Diphtheria mainly affects babies and young children. It is rare in the U.S. and Europe because children have been immunized. Diphtheria is most common in Asia. In the early 1990's more than 50,000 Russians caught Diphtheria during a major outbreak. The most effective way of prevention is to immunize people every ten years with the diphtheria/tetanus vaccine. Once diagnosed, the victim is given anti-toxins through an IV along with antibiotics. Diphtheria rarely kills people. Diphtheria originated in dirty water. It got its name from the Greek word for leather. Diphtheria is spread through close contact with an infected persons eyes, nose, throat, and skin. It can also be spread by an infected person sneezing and coughing. The pathogen is rod-shaped.
