  1. Absolute Location OBJECTIVES: Draw special lines of Latitude on a world map. Locate places in North America using Latitude and Longitude coordinates.

  2. Bell Ringer • You are in Hawaii. If you drop a steel ball weighing five pounds from a height of 45 inches, will it fall more rapidly through water at 20 degrees Fahrenheit or through water at 40 degrees Fahrenheit? Or will it make no difference?

  3. Yesterday’s Answer • Luis is buying house numbers, which cost three dollars per digit • One digit (6) costs three dollars • Two digits (36) costs six dollars • Three digits (360) costs nine dollars

  4. Turn in Homework(If necessary) • Make sure that your name, period and the date are written on the assignment • If you do not have an assignment that can be turned in: • Put your heading on a blank sheet of loose-leaf paper • Write “Homework – 9/3” on the top line • Explain why you do not have the assignment

Classroom Procedures • Bring and use the proper materials at the proper time • No gum or food • Do not talk except when the activity permits or when you have a question (raise your hand first). • Stay in your seat unless you have permission • Do not do work from other classes unless you have permission • Listen carefully to instructions, execute them to the best of your ability, and ask if you do not understand them • Participate in the lesson by doing the correct activity at the correct time: listen, ask questions, discuss, read, write, research.

Vocabulary • Absolute Location: describing location using grid coordinates, such as latitude and longitude • Relative Location: describing location in relation to someplace else (Las Cruces is north of El Paso, for example) • In today’s lesson and activities, we will be describing absolute location

  11. Activity • Given a map of North America with Latitude and Longitude lines and cities marked on the map: • Find the coordinates of the cities and write them next to the appropriate city • Note: even though we all know that North America is in the Northern and Western Hemispheres, your coordinates still need to include the N-S and E-W part of the coordinates.

  12. Homework • Given a map of North America with Latitude and Longitude lines and cities marked on the map: • Identify cities using their Latitude and Longitude coordinates • Remember that your parent/guardian must sign the assignment or it will not be accepted for scoring. Late work procedures will apply in this case.
