A Revival of Death • Cross-disciplinaryconferenceondeath and dying in Odense in 1997 initiated an initial interest in the topic • New cancer plan (Kræftplan III) with more focuson palliative care • New master’sprogramme in humanistic palliative care • PAVI (Danish Knowledge Centre for Palliative Care) • The expansion of hospices (now 17-18) and establishment of palliative teams in healthcare • Political and public interest in new and more accommodatinglegislationregardingburialpractices • Denmark recentlylisted (for a number of differentreasons) at a disappointingnumber 22 in a survey of which country it is the best to die in

Opportunities in Denmark • As one of the fewplaces, we have an integrated, advanced and research-basedmaster’s program in humanistic palliative care at universitylevel • We have severalinterestedagencies and organizations (e.g. PAVI, Kræftens Bekæmpelse, Liv&Død, Helsefonden, etc.) in supporting and fundingeducation and research • There is increasingpoliticalawareness of the importace of providingqualified support to the dying and bereaved • There is a denseunderwood of aspiringacademic talent • Throughout the media there is a curiosityaboutissuesrelated to death and dying, whichmayincrease public and politicalawareness

Challenges in Denmark • How to make social scientific studies relevant to practitioners and vice versa • How to ensure that practitioners – on the basis level as well on a more advanced level – can obtain financial support for lifelong learning and continued professional development • How to ensureknowledge of and research in death and dying is made publicly and politically potent and visible • How to support attempts at cross-disciplinarity (integratingacademic thanatology and palliative care) in concreteeducation programs and research initiatives • How to makedeath studies attractive to new generatuions of students and scholars (e.g. PhD positions) • How to strengthenfunding options in the future
