  2. Animism Defined • Animism is the religious belief that all living things have a spirit and/or a soul. • There is no deity or god in Animism. • Animists believe that all living things contribute to the world and should be respected and/or feared.

  3. Animist Today • Most Animists today live in Africa. Many Native people in the Americas and Asia are known to be Animists. • Most Animists today are very traditional in their cultural characteristics.

  4. Beliefs • Animism was often combined with ancestor worship with early civilizations. • Animist civilizations often center Animism around their culture with dancing, meditating, visions, and relics.

  5. Beliefs Continued • Tribal religious leaders in Animist societies are often called Shaman. • This person serves as a voice and intermediary between the people and the spirits. • Many Animists also believe that inanimate objects such as rocks, mountains, rivers etc have spirits.

  6. Animists Populations • The largest population of Animists today is in Sub-Sahara Africa. • Animists still exist in Native American tribes in North and South America. • Aborigines in Australia are also considered Animists.
