Empowerment • Facilitating someone/ a group to take power so that they control their own life/ves and make changes about all aspects of their life/ves. • It involves: • Knowing their rights • Having adequate resources and using them effectively • Having the information to make decisions and choices • Having relationships based on equality and sharing

  4. Social Justice • Based on a belief in the fair distribution of economic resources and political power • Equality of rights – to establish equal rights for all people regardless of income or social background • Access to essential services – provide equal access to good quality services such as housing, health, education and employment • Participation – to provide opportunities for all people to participate in personal development, social and community life and decision-making that affects them

  5. Citizen Participation • People have the right to be involved in all decisions that affect them

  6. Consumer Rights • All people have the right to be informed, have choices and redress where necessary

  7. Levels of Empowerment • Personal Empowerment occurs at the level of the individual and means freedom from the avoidable constraints of one’s own limitations • Social Empowermentoccurs at the level of society and means freedom from the restrictions imposed by the values and ideologies that impose limitations on certain groups of people • Civic Empowerment occurs at the system level of society and is reflected in the ability of people to influence policy and legislation
