  1. Properties By Veda

  2. 1. The Commutative Property • It means that the numbers can be put in any order & you still get the same answer. • Example: 2+4=6 4+2=6 • Example 2: 8•5=40 5•8=40 • Onlyaddition and multiplication are commutative • Why subtraction and division aren’t commutative: • 8-6=2 6-8=-2

  3. Commutative Problems 8+5= + _ 6+7= + _ Julie has 5 cousins and 2 brothers. How many cousins and siblings does she have all together in a commutative equation? _________________________________________

  4. Associative Property • No matter how the numbers are grouped the answer stays the same. • Only addition and multiplication are associative. • Ex: (5+6) + 3 =14 5 + (6+3) = 14 (is associative) • Ex. 2: (8-3)-2=3 8-(3-2) = 7 (not associative)

  5. Associative Problems • Is this associative? (9+5) + 4 (9-5) – 4 Dennis has 5 green marbles and 4 blue marbles. Tom has 6 yellow marbles. Using the associative property, figure out how many marbles they have all together. __________________

  6. Distributive property • The distributive property says that multiplying a number by a quantity is the same as multiplying the number by each number in the quantity. • This works with multiplication over any operation. Ex. 2(4•5) = (2•4) (2•5)

  7. Distributive property problems What are the following equations in distributive form? 8(3•7) 6(2•4) Bob is trying to solve this problem: 9(10•11) Solve it using the distributive property. _____________________________

  8. Zero property • When you multiply a number by 0, its product is 0. This works with multiplication. • Ex. 5•0=0 • Ex. 2: 1•0=0 • Ex.3: 999,999,999•0=0

  9. Zero Property problems 9•0=__ 55•0=_ Wendy bought 5 bags of apples. If the bags have 0 apples in them, how many apples does she have? ____________________

  10. Identity property(multiplication) • When you multiply a number by 1, it doesn’t change. • This works for multiplication. • Ex: 8•1=8

  11. Identity Property of multiplication problems • 8(1)=___ • 24(1)=__ • There are 56 total people at a picnic. If everyone brings one different food, how many different kinds of food will there be at the picnic? _________

  12. Identity property of addition • When you add 0 to any number, it stays the same. • This works for addition. Ex. 3+0=3

  13. Identity property of addition problems 9+0=__ 888+0=___ Jenna has 1 bag of chips. She gets 0 more at the store. How many bags of chips does she have now? ____________________
