  2. Author • Born January 1809 in Boston • Mother died of tuberculosis after his sister Rosalie was born & then his Father abandon them • 1812 moved to Richmond, Va. with is adopted parents John & Frances Poe • He was paranoid and was belligerent when drunk

  3. Plot Summary • The mad man has a conflict with the old mans eye. He kills the old guy to get rid of his eye that is giving him evil feelings. The police show up and the go to the old mans room to talk and the mad man starts hearing the dead old mans heart beat threw the floor boards that he is concealed under. His guilt finally gets the best of him and he admits the killing to the police. Each event gives a little more detail into the mans metal state and how mentally unstable he is. • Rising action: The mad man waiting every night to see the evil eye. • Climbing action: The mad man killing the old man because of his evil eye. • Climax: The police coming and then the mad man starts hearing the heart beat and going crazy over it. • Resolving action: The mad man admitting his guilt and telling the police where to find the old mans body.

  4. Theme • The mad man’s guilt is over coming him while he’s trying to prove his innocence and sanity.

  5. Character's • Protagonist: Mad Man that kills the Old Man because of his evil eye and then his guilt and insanity causes him to heart the dead Old Man’s heart beat. This drives him to his breaking point where he tells the police he killed the old man • Antagonist: Old Man which is the Mad Man’s victim due to the Mad Man’s obsession with his eye and the denial of the Mad Man’s own insanity.

  6. Setting • Most of the story takes place in the Old Man’s room. Including the killing and burring of the Old Man and the Mad Man talking to the police and his guilt and insanity getting the best of him because starts he hearing the beat of the dead Old Man’s heart. This heart beat drives him to confess his guilt.

  7. Tone & Style • First Person so you can know what the mad man is thinking and see how insane he is. • The breaking of grammar in the story shows emotions he is going threw. It makes it more real and believable. • He goes from calm and pleased with how well he killed the old man, cut him up, concealed him under the floor while never making a mess. And being so calm and collected when the police arrived while he showed them around the house. Then he turns into this frantic insane babbling idiot when his guilt and insanity starts coming over him and then he admits his guilt to the police.
