  1. On the information systems for the national scientific societies A. Kovaleva, S. Krashakov, L. Shchur, L. Shchur Department of Physical Sciences RAS, Scientific Center RAS in Chernogolovka and Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics, Russia lev@landau.ac.ru IRiD - information system RCDL2002, Dubna, 15-17 October 2002

  2. Scientific Towns in Moscow Region 28 out of 73 ST’s in Russia Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  3. Main goals Integration of IS and Resources: • integration of the ST’s IS • accelerated access to IS of ST’s • search on the subspace of ST’s • index file exchange • piloting new technologies Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  4. Main problems - 1. Connectivity Connectivity and ISP variety: • M9-IX • Frankfurt-Teleglobe (Rostelecom) • M9-IX - regions (Kaluga, …) • about 27 ISP’s at 17 ST’s • poor connectivity even within ST Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  5. Main problems - 2. Organization Difficulties Departmental variety: • Russian Academy of Sciences • Universities (national, regional, …) • Ministeries • Private R&D companies Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  6. Solutions - 1.Cache-mesh technology. Architecture of the Distributed Depository of e-Documents: • one multi-functional server at each ST • exchange via cache-mesh (DDeD) • Squid Web-Proxy Cache, www.squid-cache.org • tested under grant RFBR 98-07-90293 • and grant NSKT-NVSh 5.1.1 • parent cache at SMBN (YuMOS) NOC Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  7. Solutions - 2.Cache-mesh technology. Cache-mesh Technical Details: • connectivity dBase (hop #’s, RTT values) • connectivity dBase exchange • dynamical optimization of the route • easy to configure hierarchy • document retrieval speedup • cache-mesh route & IP routing table Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  8. Main Problem - 3.Information Flood and Garbage. Search Troubles: • www.google.com.ru • «IPv6» - 984 000 references • «IPv6 Linux» - 183 000 refs • «IPv6 IPv4» - 169 000 refs • «IPv6 gateway» - 55 900 refs • «IPv6 Linux gateway» - 22 000 refs • «IPv6 gateway LAN» - 22 000 refs Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  9. Solutions - 3.Harvest & Dublin Metacode. Gathering and Indexing: • gathering on the web-space of ST’s • file indexing • exchange of file indexes between servers • query to local server • usage of Metadata (http://dublincore.org) Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  10. Solutions - 4.Harvest & Dublin Metacode. Harvest technology: • Harvest (http://harvest.sourceforge.net) • FreeBSD & Linux • tested by IRiD - RFBR grant 01-07-90395 • and PhysNet - EPS sponsored project Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  11. Solutions - 5.Harvest, cache-mesh & IPv6. Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  12. Solutions - 6.Intra-server IPv6 network. Intra-IPv6 and Outer-IPv4: • queries: both protocols (IPv4 and IPv6) • connecting old and new technologies • some kind of information gateway Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  13. Highlights - 1.New technologies. Server functions 3in1: • member of Cache-mesh • Harvest technology • IPv6 exchange Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002

  14. Highlights - 2.New technologies. Information System highlights: • dynamic (not static) • auto-gathering (without human factors) • fresh information (nightly or weekend updated) • fast document retrieval (index+cache) • distributed (decentralized) Logical Network of ST NGI - IPv6, Yaroslavl, 21-22 May 2002
