  2. In this unit, you will learn • how to require / get or give information, such as asking for some advice at a travel agency; • how to understand railroad announcement and travel advertisement;

  4. Patterns and expressions often used for getting travel information: Can you give us some suggestions on where to go? Which place do you think we should go? Where should we go? What can we see there? What‘s there to see in Singapore? How is the West Lake? What is the city like? What is sightseeing like in Dalian? When is the next train to Beijing? Can you tell me about trains to Beijing? When / What time does the plane arrive? It arrives / is due to arrive at 17:46. How long will the journey take? Only about one hour. It is a fast / express train.

  5. Dialogue 1 I Prefer a Warmer Place (Mr. Wu is at a travel agency to get information and ask for advice.)Agent:    Good morning, sir. Can I help you?Mr. Wu:    I'd like to spend my holidays abroad.  Agent:    Yes, sir. What place would you like to see?Mr. Wu:    I have no idea. I just want to relax.  Agent:    How about Switzerland? You may enjoy skiing there.Mr. Wu:    But it's too cold, I prefer a warmer place.  Agent:    Then you may go to Singapore. There is more sunshine there.Mr. Wu:    Good idea. And I can practice my English there.

  6. Dialogue 2 Where to Spend the Holiday? Mr. Chen: Could you give me some more suggestions on what places to see this time?     Agent:  One of the most popular places is the West Coast.Mr. Chen:  What is it like?     Agent:  Lovely place and friendly people.Mr. Chen:  What's there to see?     Agent:  Disneyland, for example. But perhaps it's more attractive to children.Mr. Chen:  Good. It may make us feel younger. Thank you for your advice.

  8. At the Railway Station Mr. Smith has bought a train ticket at the booking office. He still has some time before the train leaves, so he finds a seat and sits down. A few minutes later, he hears an announcement over the loudspeaker: "Attention, please. The 8:30 train to Philadelphia has a delay of 20 minutes. The 8:30 train is running about 20 minutes late. We apologize for any inconvenience it may cause."   

  9. It is his train. Mr. Smith has a look at his watch and continues to wait. When he hears the second announcement, he almost falls asleep.  The 8:30 train to Philadelphia is now standing at Platform 5. Passengers are requested to board the train immediately.  Mr. Smith gets to his feet happily and comes up to the ticket collector. He will soon be home.

  12. come up to…: （不可用被动语态）揍到……跟前 　　　　　　接近…… He came up smiling to me. A man came up to me and asked for a match. Your work hasn’t come up to my expectations. The time is coming up to 10 o’clock.

  13. get to one’s feet: to rise from the seat Get to your feet, young man! The boy got to his feet when some of his classmates came along.

  17. Three-Day Tour of Hangzhou 1st Day:        You will go by boat to the Three Towers Reflecting the Moon and the Mid-Lake Pavilion. On the way to the islets, you will pass some scenic spots such as Solitary Hill. Then you will go ashore at Huagang Dock and visit Huagang Park. You will watch marvelous gold fish there. 2nd Day:           You will go to Lingyin Temple, and you may also visit Baoshu Pagoda and the Sunrise Terrace.

  18. 3rd Day:          You will go to Liuhe Pagoda. If time permits, visitors are recommended to visit tea farms, silk factories, and arts and handicraftworkshops
