Cover Letters – letters that accompany résumés, applications, documents, contracts…

A cover letter is a letter of introduction to the person who might hire you. It should complement, not duplicate your résumé.

Tips for Cover Letters

  • Address it to a specific person, if possible

  • The body of the letter about half a page

  • Why you are sending it (objective statement)

  • What response you are expecting

  • Your information – name, address, e-mail, phone number

  • Close with appreciation and/or forward-looking statement

Tips for Cover Letters - continued

  • Check for accuracy with names, titles, addresses

  • Be brief – 30 seconds to make an impression

  • Clean, attractive page with no errors in capitalization, spelling, usage

  • Make specific to the company, not generic

  • Be professional, not “cute”

Tips for Cover Letters - continued

  • If no contact name is given in a job listing, the greeting of the cover letter may read:

  • Dear Human Resources Department:

    OR

  • Dear Hiring Manager:

The greeting must have a colon (:) after it.

Tips for Cover Letters- continued

  • Use standard fonts for letters and resumes.

  • Size = 10 or 12

  • Type = Standard such as Times New Roman

  • Stay away from decorative fonts, backgrounds, or borders unless the job is for an art position.

  • No long paragraphs; bullet points best (resume)

Human Resources (HR)

  • The department in a company that is responsible for implementing strategies and policies relating to the management of individuals

  • Recruits for interviews, compiles benefits packages, submits payroll, does orientations, communicates company policies, does paperwork for hiring including background checks…

Random sentences pulled from cover letters

  • I am writing to introduce myself and inquire about openings for Tae Kwon Do instructor.

  • I believe I am well qualified to apply for your opening for a water quality extension agent.

  • In response to your ad for a web site producer/editor, I am enclosing my résumé, which details my considerable experience in this area.
