A Topic Too Complex for a Single Point of View • In early planning (2011 CROI) appreciated that effort demanded broad expertise and openness to questions • Invited Working Group with expertise in: • Basic science (immunology, cell biology, pathology, rheumatology) • Epidemiology • Neurology • Geriatrics • Social and behavioral research • HIV care (medicine, nursing, infectious diseases, oncology) • Community impact

Process of the Working Group Working group members volunteered for assignment in four subgroups: Mechanism and triggering of functional decline/Aging in HIV-infected persons Biomarkers and clinical indices as predictors/Surrogate outcome markers Aging with HIV infection: Multi-morbidity and the clinical research agenda Societal infrastructure, mental health/substance abuse, and care giving issues

  5. Task to Subgroups Summarize knowledge and state the problem in research area Identify priority research areas Point out specific knowledge gaps Suggest types of research funding needed in each area Final report crafted from each subgroup report and prepared for publication as JAIDS supplement

Structure of Our Session Three presentations addressing selected issues raised by our overall process Premature Aging and Functional Decline Associated with HIV Disease: Mechanisms and Triggers: Rita Effros (Related to subgroups 1&2) Integration of Clinical Care for Individuals Aging with HIV: Amy Justice (Related to subgroups 2&3) Socio-behavioral Issues in Aging and HIV: Critical for Success in Prevention and Care: Sherry Deren (Related to subgroup 4)
