  1. Part one Historyof Carl Valentin GmbH

  2. History ofCarl Valentin GmbH • 1918 Formation in Stuttgart as factory for production of seal labels • 1957Establishment of a cash register company in Schwenningen • 1959 Start producing label printers • 1979 Development of thermal and thermal transfer printers • TodayComplete product range for high performance sector of ident technology

  3. Why Carl Valentin GmbH? Our strength in comparison to competitors • Uniquely large product range as printer manufacturer (desktop printers, print engines, direct printers, software, labels and ribbons) • Special customer requirements even for smaller quantities • Own label design software • New developments of printer software are integrated in the own label design software almost at the same • Relative easy personal contact on all levels at Valentin • Stand-alone capability of all our printers, except MICRA & PICA series • Use of different print head types such as Corner or Flat Type and thick or thin film – depending on the application • Transfer ribbon savings at SPECTRA series

  4. Part two Principeof thermal printing

  5. Thermal and thermal transfer print The print procedure Thermal print With thermal direct print no ribbon is being used. Because of color changing the label material reacts on temperature of the print head. This procedure is always being used for temporary labeling, e.g. packet labels, address labels. Thermal transfer print With thermal transfer print a ribbon is being used that harmonizeswith the printed label material. By the produced temperatureof print head, colored pigments (mostly black) are transferredfrom ribbon to label material. Between label material andcolored pigments a thermo chemical reaction takes place. Inthat way they receive a printing resistant to mechanical andpartly chemical abrasion.

  6. Printheads What is to consider and which print head can I offer? The Flat Head is the most used print head: the dot line is about 5 – 10 mm from the edge of carrier plate. The ribbon is usually led away to the top by an additional roll. The separation of media is effected with a certain temporal and special delay after transmission of color. The heat impulse has a moderate amplitude but lasts relatively for a long time. The life expectancy of the Flat Heads are usually much higher than the ones of the Corner Type / Near Edge print heads. Flat Type With the Corner Type or Near Edge print head the dot line is complete near by the edge of the ceramic carrier plate – „Near-edge“. The ribbon is led away to the top without additional direction change in a sharp angle. The separation of ribbon and label is effected immediately after transmission of color. The heat impulse is strong, but short! For printers with Near Edge print heads the use of special ribbons is recommended. The Corner Type / Near Edge print head makes a better print quality possible. Yet the disadvantage is that this type of print head needs a special ribbon material. Corner Type (Near Edge Type)
