Fort Carson • 2nd Largest Employer in Colorado • 5th Largest Military Retiree Community in the U.S. • Population as of 2010 • Military: approximately 24,000 • Family Members: approximately 36,000 • Army Civilians: 5700 • Retirees: approximately 47,000 in the local area • Would Rank 14th Largest City in Colorado • (#13 Highlands Ranch, CO – 70,931 & • #14 Loveland, CO – 50,608) • Size • Fort Carson City: 7,000 Acres • Training Area: 130,404 Acres • Square Miles: 215 sq mi • Would Rank 42nd City with Largest Land Area in U.S. (#50 Colorado Springs – 186 sq mi)

Outside the Wire successes…. • Pike’s Peak Area Council of Governments (PPACG) – active participant on several committees and executive committee • Mountain Post Historical Society - museum • Partnership with National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Golden, CO) • Wind Power Feasibility Study • Biomass Study • Partnership with Civil Engineering Research Laboratory • Combat Aviation Brigade study • Sustainability Breakfasts • Monthly topics tied to sustainability goals (Energy, Water, Waste, etc.) • Well-attended by local community (Colorado Springs Utilities, AF Academy, etc.)

Outside the Wire successes… • Southern Colorado Sustainability Conference • http://www.catamountinstitute.org/businesses/sustainability-conference • Started by Fort Carson then handed to Catamount Institute • Local Contractor experience with LEED construction • 39 LEED Certified buildings on Fort Carson • Silver: 21 • Gold: 15 • Platinum: 0 • Certifiable: 4 • 11 pending buildings - 2 are projected to be platinum. • PRISTINE Energy Project • research has focused on barriers and solutions to sustainable energy deployment, and identification of energy sources with highest sustainability performance potential through life-cycle analysis – working with PPACG
