  1. Lesson 6 Observing the Fiddler Crab more closely

  2. Materials • Record sheet 6-A: Observing the Fiddler Crab • Record sheet 6-B: Drawing the Fiddler Crab • Record Sheet 4-A: Observing the Frog • Hand lens • Crab placed in plastic cup with lid • Sheet of My Habitat

  3. Overview • Observe, describe, and record the characteristics of the fiddler crab in words and drawings

  4. Background • Crabs are more active after school hours. • Zoologists try either to observe them at other times or to look for evidence that certain behaviors have taken place. • Example: May not observe them eating but since the food was moved, mashed, or disappeared, you can assume that they ate it.

  5. What would you like to know about the crabs?

  6. Record observations, discoveries, and questions in notebook. • What body parts do you see the crab using on land and in water? • Share • Draw a picture of the crab in its habitat.

  7. Extensions • View a video about life in a salt marsh or mangrove swamp. • Locate local salt marshes and other wetlands on a map of the United States. Are fiddler crabs indigenous to that area? • People often think crabs resemble spiders. Research spiders and compare them with crabs. • Hermit crabs are popular pets. Research these crabs and compare them with fiddler crabs. Why are fiddlers not as popular pets?
