  1. Please write down your first impression, the first thing you think of, for the following sensory associations. All of them have to do with your response to your reading of the novel Heart of Darkness. 1. What single word do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 2. What phrase of series of words do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 3. What color or series of colors do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 4. What sound or series do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 5. What taste or flavor do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 6. What smell do you associate with Heart of Darkness? 7. What tactile impression, texture, feeling, or touch do you associate with Heart of Darkness?

  2. Using your responses, create a poem about Heart of Darkness that will actually be your sensory response to the story. Add, subtract, and rearrange the words any way you like to make your poem. Then, create an artistic border or background to frame your poem. Your artwork should, obviously, reinforce the impressions you have on the story. Here is my attempt at writing a poem from my own sensory first impressions and at creating a visual representation to go along with the poem.

  3. Here is the grading rubric.

  4. Have a wonderful day coloring. If you finish your poem and picture today, leave it here. Be sure to put your name on the FRONT of the picture. If you take it home to finish, be sure and bring it back so that we can hang them all up tomorrow. You can take down and carry away your drawings of the Emily Dickinson poem, There is no frigate like a book. Buh-Bye!
