  2. Causes of WWI • Militarism- nations engage in a massive military buildup • to protect overseas colonies • anxious to use military might • Alliances- protect themselves from opposing forces • Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy • Triple Entente- Great Britain, France, Russia

  3. Imperialism- rival empires seek to keep power • strive to keep power in colonies • rivalries very intense • Nationalism- loyalty and devotion to culture/country • newly unified countries had strong sense of nationalism, Germany, Serbia, Italy
