  1. Chapter 22 Section 4 & 5 Made by Stephen Gong Taught by Tina & Matt

  2. Cyclic Hydrocarbons • In some hydrocarbon compounds, the carbon chain is in the form of a ring. • Compounds that contain a hydrocarbon ring are called Cyclic hydrocarbons.

  3. Cyclic Hydrocarbons

  4. Benzene & aromatic compound • Benzene: C6H6, the simplest example of an aromatic compound. • Aromatic compound: an organic compound that contains a benzene ring or other ring in which the bonding is like that of benzene ;has a odor

  5. The structure of Benzene • In a benzene molecule, the bonding electrons between carbon atoms are shared evenly around the ring.

  6. Substituted Aromatic Compounds • Substituent: an atom or group of atoms that can take the place of a hydrogen atom on the chain. • When the benzene ring is a substituent on an alkane, the C6H6 group is called a phenyl group • Suitable for IUPAC system

  7. Name the following compounds

  8. The molecules of both cyclohexane and benzene have six carbon atoms bonded in a ring. What is the difference between these two compounds

  9. Natural Gas • An important source of alkanes of low molar mass.

  10. Petroleum • The refining process starts with the distillation of petroleum(crude oil) into fractions according to boiling point.

  11. Coal • Classified by its hardness and carbon content. • Composition: consists largely of condensed aromatic compounds of extremely high molar mass. • These compounds have high proportion of carbon compared with hydrogen.

  12. Review Topics • Naming and drawing chain structure • Alkane ,Alkene ,Alkyne • General concept(straight chain/ branched chain/saturated compounds/unsturated compounds/cyclic hydrocarbons) • Isomers(different types /concept/ drawing) • Benzene & substituted Aromatic compounds(concept/naming /drawing) • In our daily life

  13. Homework • Review by yourself • Made a flashcard as the cheat sheet (Only one side) • Going to have a 20-mins Jeopardy ,Be ready !~There will be extra points for the winning team
