  2. Watts • Prior to World War 2, laws restricted to owning property in an area called Watts • During the 1930s and 1940s, this neighbourhood became severely overcrowded, and housing projects had to be built

  3. White flight • 1950s, the Santa Monica Freeway was built, accelerating the movement of White residents to the suburbs

  4. Moneyed Flight • Also, the Civil Rights movement, which removed laws that restricted Blacks to certain neighbourhoods, caused more wealthy residents to leave the South Central area • This left the area impoverished

  5. Watts riots • 1965, after the arrest of Marquette Fry on a traffic violation, a mob formed and became violent • A large-scale riot developed which lasted 5 days • By the time the riot subsided, 34 people had been killed, 1,032 injured, and 3,438 arrested.

  6. Rise in Street Crime • Poverty led to a rise in street crime • By 1980s, a drop in the price of crack cocaine led to increased drug dealing • As the game became more lucrative, violence increased to control blocks

  7. 1992 Los Angeles Riots • In 1992, a jury acquitted the police officers accused of beating Rodney King • Widespread looting, assault, arson and murder occurred, and property damages topped roughly $1 billion. In all, 53 people died during the riots and thousands more were injured
