  1. Making an Inference Post –It Strategy and It Says, I Say Strategy

  2. Inference • An inference is a conclusion that you make using the text and what you already know. • Not written in the book. This is where “reading between the lines” happens. • You can inference – what is going to happen next (prediction), how a character is feeling, what a character may be referring to. = + What You Know Text An inference

  3. Personal Connection vs. Background Knowledge • Personal Connection • Finding a character, setting, theme, or event that you can relate to your own life. • While you may have never been in an arena killing other kids (Hunger Games), you have probably stuck up for a brother, sister, friend, etc. and took the blame like Katniss volunteered for Prim. • Background Knowledge (Schema) • Looking to what you already know to make an inference. This may be a lesson you learned in life, in school, on TV, etc. • In Maze Runner, Thomas wakes up remembering who he is but nothing else. I know that many times people with memory loss can remember certain things, but not everything. If someone gets a concussion they may remember everything except the day before, of, and after the injury.

  4. The Wednesday Surprise Post-It Strategy • Post –It - strategy this week will focus only on personal connections and background knowledge. • Follow along as I model this. Try and think if you have any and we will share them at the end.

  5. Personal Connection • Tuesdays and Thursdays with my Nana during school breaks

  6. Background Knowledge • Big cities normally have a city bus.

  7. Personal Connection • I used to wait at the window for my Pop and Gigi to get in town from Houston.

  8. Personal Connection • Pop one year pretended that all my Christmas presents were from boys in my class at school. He was a great actor about it.

  9. Background Knowledge • Families that all get together for birthdays are very close and have a lot of memories.

  10. Background Knowledge • Sometimes parents travel for their jobs.

  11. Background Knowledge • As people get older their joints start to hurt.

  12. Personal Connection • I get excited about giving presents to people because I work really hard on finding the prefect one.

  13. Personal Connection • Often times family or economic situations can cause someone to not gain an education. This happened a lot a long time ago, so some older people may struggle with this.

  14. Personal Connection • My Opa is always trying to learn new things even though he is 80.

  15. Personal Connection • My Gigi puts her cheek to mine when she hugs me.
