Cal Grant C Program Background • Participation in Cal Grant C is limited to students who are either enrolled or planning to enroll in a recognized vocational/technical/occupational program of at least four months in length. Students directly pursuing a four-year degree, graduate study course, prerequisites or general education courses are not eligible. • Cal Grant C recipients are selected during the March 2 competition cycle. Students that do not qualify during the competitive run but indicate on their FAFSA that they will pursue a vocational/technical/occupational program will receive a Cal Grant C Supplement Form.

  4. Cal Grant C Program Background • State authorized to offer 7,761 Cal Grant C awards per academic year. Award Year Sent Out Submitted Percentage

  5. Cal Grant C Program Scoring Criteria 1. Work History – 25 points 2. Education History – 25 points 3. Grade Point Average – 15 points (optional) 4. Work Recommendation– 35 points Total Points 100 points Total Points 65 points After consulting with the Grant Advisory Committee, the “Work Recommendation” criteria was eliminated from the Supplement Form and the scoring criteria during the 2009-10 academic year. This reduced the total points to 65.

  7. SB 451 (2011) • Requires the Commission to give priority in granting Cal Grant C awards to students pursuing an occupational or technical training in areas that meet two of the three following criteria: • High Employment Need • High Employment Growth • High Wage

  8. Implementation Process • Expert consultation • Criteria based priority list • The final list is the product of strict criteria, not arbitrary selection. • Solid data • Balance

  9. Priority Points • The student indicates an occupation on the Cal Grant C Supplement Form. • If the occupation the student selected is on the priority list, the student will automatically receive 35 points in the scoring criteria. • There is no change to the current awarding process.

  10. Criteria • High Need • Top 10 percent of occupations as measured by the projected number of open positions. • High Growth • Top 10 percent of occupations as measured by the projected number of total positions available. • High Wage • 150% of the average wage for Californian’s with some college or an Associate’s Degree according to the U.S. Census American Community Survey.
