  1. Digital citizenship among ethnic minorities in Brussels Stefan Mertens

  2. A survey : 1005 youngsters in Brussels • Three social gaps in Brussels : ethnicity, social class and language community • Three fields of study : digital media possession, digital media use and digital media applications • Two contrasting pairs of hypotheses : differentiation versus diffusion and deprivation versus integration

  3. Four cultural variables • Country of birth • Nationality • Language ability • Homeland orientation

  4. Possession results • No computer divide • Internet divide : social class and ethnicity • More game consoles : lower classes and allochtons  Literacy divide • “Status” (structural) and “Country of birth” (cultural) most explaining variables

  5. Use results • Computer and Internet divide between autochtons and allochtons • No other divides • Structural and cultural variables : not much explanatory power

  6. Applications results • Social compensatory effect of Internet applications (ethnicity and social class) • Differentiated use of diverse media (ethnicity and social class) • No important differences between both language communities

  7. Conclusions • Differentiation hypothesis (social class, ethnicity) more important than diffusion hypothesis (language community) • Deprivation and integration hypothesis are both important • The deprivation hypothesis has the largest quantitative effect
