ITU Competition Rules:Swimming Conduct • Athletes may use any stroke to propel themselves through the water. They may also tread water or float. It is allowed to push off the ground at the beginning and the end of every swim lap. • Athletes must follow the prescribed swim course. • Athletes may stand on the bottom or rest by holding an inanimate object, such as a buoy or stationary boat. • In an emergency, an athlete should raise an arm overhead and call for assistance. Once official assistance is rendered, the athlete must retire from the competition.

ITU Competition Rules:Swimming Conduct -2 • Water temperature must be taken one (1) hour prior to the start of the event on race day. It must be taken at the middle of the course and in two other areas on the swim course, at a depth of 60 cm. The lowest measured temperature will be considered as the official water temperature.
ITU Competition Rules:Swimming Conduct -3 • The measured water temperature is not always the water temperature used in the final decision for wetsuit use or cancelation. • If the water temperature is lower than 20ºC and the air temperature is lower than the water temperature, then the adjusted value is to decrease the measured water temperature by 0,5ºC every 1.0ºC of difference between the air and water temperatures.
ITU Competition Rules:Swimming Conduct -4 • If other weather conditions dictate, the Technical and Medical Delegates may adapt limits on the swim length or provisions about the wetsuit use. The final decision will be made one hour before the start, and will be clearly communicated to the athletes by the Technical Delegate. • Athletes must wear their ITU approved uniform for non-wetsuit swims. If athletes choose to wear a second suit, it must be worn underneath the official uniform and cannot be removed during the entire competition.
Elite Athletes’ Starting Position Selection • Prior to the start of the competition athletes are lined up for the start in the order of their start number unless they have been reallocated after the Athletes’ Briefing. • The athletes upon entering the pontoon go directly to their selected numbered position and stay in that position until the start. A selected position cannot be changed by any athlete during the Starting Position Selection process. • Start-line Technical Officials note each athlete’s race number and the selected starting position. • Starting Position Selection ends when every athlete is in a start position.
Elite Athletes’ Start Procedure • After all athletes are in position “take your mark" is announced. 3-6 seconds after the start signal is to be given. • Four Technical Officials are involved in the start procedure. • The two Start Technical Officials are standing beside each other in the middle of the start area behind the athletes. • The two False Start Technical Officials stand on both sides of the start area to have a clear view of the start. • The False Start Technical Official have an air horn in case it is needed to give a false start signal (several short horn blasts) and a photo/video camera in case it is needed to give a time penalty in T1. • The first Start Technical Official is responsible for announcing “take your mark". • The second Start Technical Official is responsible for giving the start signal

Elite Athletes’ Start Procedure • Early start: Athletes are not allowed to move past the start line between “take your mark” is announced and the start horn. • In case of a false start (several athletes move forward before the start horn) the athletes have to come back to their previously selected position controlled by the Start-line Technical Officials and the start procedure has to begin again. • In the case of an early start of one or two athletes the race can continue, but the early starters will receive a 15 second penalty in Transition 1.

Swim Official’ duties • Chief Swim Official • Assistant Swim Officials (2-4) • Complete final check of start area: • width • Spacing • Numbering • Carpet • pre-start line • Organise a rehearsal with all start officials including: the routine to enter and exit the start area; the start, a false start, correct instruction, “take your mark” • Check sound system and start mechanism • Ensure an assistant is assigned to each start official to record athlete position on start • Review the announcer’s script for presenting the athletes
Swim Official’ duties • Review start area security with the LOC • Ensure sufficient red flags • Verify course measurement: • distance to first buoy • laser measurement • turn angles • swim exit • hazards and depth • Measure water temperature and post in host hotel, athlete lounge and inform TD • Guarantee boats and officials for each turn • Secure video cameras for start, turn and exit • Arrange and brief all water safety personal
Failing to follow the prescribed course? Penalties- Violations Stop and Go and re-enter the race by the same point. If fails to that DSQ
