  1. DNA

  2. DNA • DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid ★Each chromosome consists of 1 DNA molecule + several proteins

  3. DNA • What does DNA consist of?

  4. DNA

  5. DNA • NUCLEOTIDES: • 5-carbon sugar = deoxyribose • Phosphate group • Nitrogenous base (contains nitrogen)…4 kinds: Purines: Adenine (A) & Guanine (G) Pyrimidines: Cytosine (C) & Thymine (T)

  6. DNA

  7. DNA A ★ A pairs with T T

  8. DNA C ★ C pairs with G G

  9. DNA How do we know?

  10. DNA Watson & Crick

  11. DNA Rosalind Franklin

  12. DNA • BACTERIOPHAGE: Virus that infects bacteria. Attaches to the cell surface & injects its genetic info into the cell which then use the bacteria to create many new bacteriophages. #’s increase until they break out, killing the cell

  13. DNA How does it work?

  14. DNA • DNA REPLICATION: DNA separates into 2 strands, then produces 2 new, complimentary strands, following the rules of base pairing. Each strand of the double helix serves as a template or model for the new strand.

  15. DNA • ENZYMES “unzip” the DNA molecule by breaking H-bonds between base pairs.

  16. DNA

  17. DNA • DNA POLYMERASE: joins individual nucleotides to the template strand & proofreads to ensure accuracy.
