  1. Study Session:Test Writing Strategies SNC1D

  2. General Strategies – MC Tests • Read the question with the choices covered and try to answer it on your own. • Look for your answer among possible choices • Example: • 2. How many neutrons are there in an atom of fluorine? • a) 9 • b) 10 • c) 19 • d) 28

  3. General Strategies – MC Tests • HIGHLIGHT key words: e.g. “not”, “all”, “never”, “except”, “never”, “always” etc. • Example: • 19. Rutherford’s gold foil experiment consisted of beaming positively charged particles at thin gold foil. Most of these particles went straight through the gold foil, but a few of them were deflected. Which of these statements could Rutherford not have inferred based on his observations? • a) Most of the atom is empty space. • b) The centre of the atom has a positive charge. • c) Electrons exist in orbits, and can jump to and from different orbits. • d) The centre of the atom is very dense (a lot of mass in a small space).

  4. General Strategies – MC Tests • HIGHLIGHT key words: e.g. “not”, “all”, “never”, “except”, “never”, “always” etc. • Another Example: • 4. All of the following are properties of magnesium. Identify the physical property. • a) Magnesium burns in air with a brilliant white flame. • b) Magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce a gas. • c) Magnesium is a good conductor of electricity. • d) Magnesium combines with nitrogen to form a black powder.

  5. General Strategies – MC Tests • Look at all the possible answers before choosing • Use a process of elimination to narrow down your choices •  25. The most reactive elements in the periodic table are found in: • a) Groups 1 and 18. • b) Groups 2 and 15. • c) Groups 3 and 4. • d) Groups 1 and 17.

  6. General Strategies – MC Tests • Go back and circle/highlight questions you have no answer to (or don’t know how to answer) • Read through the questions 3 times.

  7. General Strategies – MC Tests • Don’t keep changing your answer • If you get stuck, ‘go with your gut’ NEVER leave a question blank! You have a 25% shot at getting it right!

  8. Good Study Strategies

  9. Good Study Strategies • Use of colour • Make a concept map • Use mnemonic • Regular review (no cramming) • Making connections to real-world applications • Developing Analogies • Drawing a diagram • Explaining to someone else • Acting it out
