  1. Science Fair Project How long does it take until different fruits burn Alyssa H. Mrs. Hall

  2. Statement of the Problem How long does it take for an apple, peach, banana, and an orange to burn and become black?

  3. Research • There was no website that held the information I was looking for, so I decided that it would be interesting to possibly be the first to try this, so I did. • But I did find out that fruit is not flammable but it will burn and become hot.

  4. Variables • Controlled variables: The candle • Independent variable: The different fruits.

  5. Hypothesis My hypothesis is that I think that the banana will be the first one that will burn and become black. I think this because it seems to be the first because in a peel they darken within a week.

  6. Materials • You will need one candle, and a way to light it. • Three of each of the fruits you are using. • A timer, for measuring the amount of time it takes to burn. • A notepad and pencil for writing down observations. • And I used toothpicks to hold up the fruit over the candle so I didn’t get burned, but you can use whatever works for you.

  7. Procedure • 1. Take the peeling off of the fruits with a peel. • 2. Put whatever you are using to hold the fruit up through the fruit you are doing first. • 3. Get somebody to start the timer when you light the candle. • 4. Light the candle and start the timer. • 5. Hold the fruit over the candle and rotate it to get the heat to spread evenly across the fruit. • 6. Write down any observations that you notice. • 7. When the fruit becomes black, take it off the candle and record the time. • 8. Repeat steps 1-7 three times or until you are satisfied with the results.

  8. Data/Observations

  9. Conclusion My hypothesis was incorrect. The peach was the one that was the first one to burn and become black. I also saw that the apple was the last one to become black every time.
