  10. Ironically, the conquests of the Roman armies led to serious economic problems for Rome. How? • Conquest led to lots of loot for the rich, who built huge farms, the Latifundia. • Conquest also brought in lots of slaves (1/3 of Italy’s population were slaves). • Conquest also brought in lots of cheap grain from conquered lands (like Egypt). • Small farmers could not compete with the huge slave using Latifundiaor the foreign grain so they went into debt, lost their land, and moved into the city.

  11. Why do the think the Plebians became uppity? Do you think they were justified? • Loss of land. • Not enough money for grain. • Assassination of the plebian champions, the Gracchus brothers. • Continuing contempt and bad treatment by the patricians. • Justified? According to who?

  12. Do you think the assassins of Julius Casar were justified? Why or why not?

  13. Do you think the assassins of Julius Caesar were justified? Why or why not? • Caesar was assassinated because his patrician friends feared he was becoming too powerful and was a threat to the Republic. • Was he? • If so, was murder the best way to deal with the situation? • Did the murder solve the problem of plebian unrest?
