  31. What is RefWorks? • A Web-based citation manager and bibliography builder • It is free to all McMaster students and faculty! • Accessible from any computer with an Internet connection.

  32. What Does RefWorks Do? • Creates a personal database of citations • Automatically gets references from many online databases • Organizes and manages your references • Formats bibliographies, footnotes, and in-text citations

  33. Access RefWorks from Library Home page

  34. RefWorks Account / Login

  35. To use RefWorks off-campus, you must be logged in to LibAccess with your MAC ID, OR … log in with McMaster’s group code: RWMcMasterU Accessing RefWorks from home…

  36. Getting References Into RefWorks • Export references from a database • Retrieve references from selected library catalogues • Manually enter references from any resource • Import text files • Capture data from a web page • Import from RSS feeds For more information, consult RefWorks online tutorials & help pages

  37. Export References From a Database • Several online database service providers have a built-in RefWorks direct exportfeature • It is important to check the information you export into RefWorks to make sure the information you need is present and in the correct location

  38. Some Databases That Support Direct Export to RefWorks • Business Source Complete • Canadian Business and Current Affairs (CBCA) • Canadian Periodical Index (CPI.Q) • LexisNexis AcademicSee RefWorks Help for a fulll list of databases that support direct export.

  39. Export References From an Online Library Catalogue • Export references from McMaster’s Library Catalogue, http://libcat.mcmaster.ca either: • One item at a time: click on RefWorks button in full catalogue display • Several items at once: search catalogue within RefWorks (Search menu > Online Catalogue or Database)

  40. Manually Entering References into RefWorks • Most business databases do not support direct export into RefWorks • In these cases, you can put references into RefWorks manually (References menu > Add New Reference)

  41. Organizing and Managing Your References • Newly exported references are automatically placed in the Last Imported Folder • You can create additional folders to organize your references by topic, assignment, etc

  42. …Organizing and Managing Your References cont. • Each reference is automatically assigned a unique identification number or RefID • Individual references can be placed in more than one folder • References can be removed from a folder and/or deleted from your database

  43. Creating a Bibliography • A bibliography is a list of references organized according to the rules of a particular citation style (e.g. Chicago, APA, MLA, etc.) • You can create a stand-alone bibliography by selecting some references and clicking the Bibliography button

  44. Before handing in your paper… • Check the bibliography for missing information and formatting problems • Make corrections directly in the document OR make changes to the record in RefWorks • Note: This means you need to understand the elements of the citation style you wish to use.

  45. Got Questions? • Try an online RefWorks tutorial • http://refworks.scholarsportal.info/tutorial/ • Attend another RefWorks workshop • Ask the Research Help staff at the Library • Contact me: Ines Perkovic Business Liaison Librarian, Innis Library perkovic@mcmaster.ca 905.525.9140 ext. 21359
