What can I expect from a BTEC course? • The BTEC level 3 Diploma is a 120 credit unit which runs over 2 years compiling a wide range of units focusing on various aspects of Health and Social Care. • The course will provide with the equivalent of tow A Levels which must be gained through achieving a minimum of a Distinction. • The course will also involve work experience which will be arranged with the help of Lauren Shukru the Welfare Coordinator which will have to completed in your own time. • You will be required to complete a minimum of a 100 hours of work experience a year.

  6. What can I expect from a BTEC course? • The course is assessed through your work experience, and assignment which may take the form of report, presentations, essays, etc. • You will need to meet various deadlines at different times which will allocated by your course tutors, in your case, myself and Jane. • You will be expected to attend all lessons, and make use of the facilities available at the college such as the library, structured study area, etc.

How is the course run ? • You will see me 5 times a week: • Wednesday 1st period – taught session, • Wednesday 2nd period – computers, • Thursday 3rd period – taught session, • Friday 4th and 5th period – computers. • The aim of this structure is to give you the information required in order to gain the basic knowledge as well as giving you the opportunity to complete your tasks with facilitated support during the computer based sessions.

What units will we be covering in the first year ? • Unit 2 – Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care ( 10 credits – mandatory unit) • Unit 7 – Sociological perspectives in Health and Social Care (5 credits – optional unit) • Unit 8 – Psychological perspectives in health and Social Care (5 credits – optional unit) • Unit 1 – Developing Effective Communication in Health and Social Care (10 credits – mandatory unit)

Tips for success • Be conscientious – keep your resources in a central place, including assignments briefs, notes, and make sure that you proof read your work. • Be punctual – attend your lessons on time and any other relevant guest speakers/trips, etc. a few minutes lost could be the difference between a Pass, Merit or a Distinction. • Be organised – you will not only be working towards my deadlines but also Jane’s so use a diary, calendar on your smart phone to make sure you meet all deadlines. • ASK FOR HELP – remember if you don’t ask you don’t get so feel free to ask myself, Jane, Librarians, teachers in the structured study area next to room 24. • Make full use of the computer based session to get one to one support from me.

Unit 2 – A brief Introduction • This unit introduces you to equality, diversity and rights in health and social care settings, • You need to be aware if those issues because you will be faced with them on a daily basis, • This unit is one of the most important one and it is crucial that you understand the regulations regarding equality, diversity and rights.

Unit 2 Outline After completing this unit you should: • Understand the concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care, • Know discriminatory practices in health and social care, • Understand how national initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practice, • Know how anti-discriminatory practice is promoted in health and social care settings

  13. Assessment in Unit 2 • You will be required to complete two separate assignment which each include a variety of tasks which you need to complete, • It is compulsory that you complete all of the Pass and Merit criteria, • You will need to ensure that you meet they deadlines set by myself.

Introduction Diversity a personal view Class discussion: How can you benefit from knowing about knowing about the differences raised in the last exercise ? • A very good starting point when looking at the concept of diversity is to look at yourself, your family and your friends. • Answer the following question on your own: • What are the nationalities of your friends and family? • What music do you like? • What is your favourite food? • What language can you or your family/friends speak? • What and how do you celebrate in your culture?

Introduction • You will also need to recognise when individuals are being treated unfairly, to challenge such mistreatment and help those who are mistreated. • Diversity should be recognised and celebrated and it is important to support individuals diversity when working in health and social care settings.

Discussion Task • You will need to split yourselves into 7 small groups of 2 or 3 students, • You will randomly pick out a topic from the box and will need to 5 five examples demonstrating how your topic has benefited from diversity. • E.g. – the arts have benefited from diversity has it enables us through films for examples to learn about different cultures.
