    3. 4/29/2012 4:33 AM Design Page 9 - 3 Recommendations for Future Reviews Hold reviews Whenever you make a significant change to the design Normally, hold a review early in each phase to go over detailed requirements and design Include in the review process Re-examination of the issues, action items, and decisions Stakeholders affected by the design -- especially the end-users An independent review leader with technical expertise in CVISN, to help facilitate the review process, and make technical comments. Remember that it’s easier, cheaper, and more sensible to fix something on paper than something that’s already implemented.

Build on them. Join in the periodic CVISN State Program Manager telecons. Contact Warren Dunham (wbda@aol.com) if you want to participate. Participate in upcoming CVISN Deployment Conferences/Forums. You’ll be notified when they are scheduled. If you’ve seen that another state is taking a similar approach, see if you can find a way to continue working together. You might want to explore collaborating on some aspect of your program using a pooled funds study. Try to get as much leverage as you can from the lessons learned by those who have gone before you. Consider using the Intelligent Transportation Peer-to-Peer program to get a little help. See their Web site http://www.its.dot.gov/peer/peer.htm for more information. The Intelligent Transportation Peer-to-Peer Program is a FHWA, FTA, & FMCSA Technical Assistance Program that provides public sector transportation stakeholders with a convenient method to tap into the growing knowledge base of ITS experience receive short-term assistance. Over 120 ITS professionals lend their technical expertise to the Peer-to-Peer Program. The USDOT carefully selects each participant based on his/her qualifications, background, and experience. Most of the program’s Peers are public sector transportation professionals who are active in the planning, design, procurement and implementation of ITS. Additional private sector Peers supplement the vast technical expertise of the public sector Peers to ensure the program offers the most complete coverage of ITS technical issues. Any public agency or group that is involved in planning, evaluating, making decisions, or operating an ITS system or its components can access the Peer-to-Peer Program. The program is designed to provide short-term assistance to address specific, technical issues. The program staff will listen to the requestor's issues and suggest an approach to provide the assistance. Some issues may be resolved directly by the program staff; other specific, technical issues may be addressed through assistance from a Peer. Requestors across the nation have included: state DOT headquarters and district offices; transit authorities; turnpike and tollway authorities; metropolitan planning organizations; city and county transportation and public works offices; and transportation management agencies. Make sure your plans and designs support the big picture. Make sure your plans are included in STIP and CVSP. Plan checks and balances to stay in synch. Send finished plans and designs to FMCSA Nominal deadline for submittal of internally approved designs and plans to FMCSA is 90 days following this workshop. Please submit your design and planning documents both in hardcopy format and electronically to FMCSA Headquarters through your division office. FMCSA will review the design and plan and send you a response, nominally within ~45 days.
