  1. Hi!  • Sorry I’m absent and not able to elaborate on these notes. My daughter is sick. • Please read through this power point with your group and discuss what doesn’t make sense OR write down your questions and then email me! Please don’t wait until I came back because that’s too long to be confused.

  2. Evolution (Reference: Chapters 14,15 & 16)

  3. Evolution How does it happen? What is the evidence? What IS it really?

  4. Evolution Survey • The survey was designed to pull out misconceptions. • Please keep this survey in mind as we go.

  5. Define Evolution! • Change in a population of organisms over time which has a pattern and can lead to new population of species

  6. Evolution Does not Address • Presence of higher powers • How life began • Morality • Whether species are “better” or “higher order” • The meaning of life or significance of “being human” • Religion

  7. There is very little scientific debate • Scientists debate the details of evolution but there is overwhelming consensus that evolution does occur • There is a lot ofevidence

  8. Science teachers are not required to teach other belief systems so we do not teach creationism.

  9. But evolution is a theory… • A “theory” in science is a well-supported argument that matches all experimental evidence and is widely accepted – like gravity • Scientists never say we “prove” or we “know”. We say “the data suggests or supports”

  10. Creationism • Started long before the Catholic Church existed • Ancient Greek philosophers thought the Earth and its species were fixed, perfect and designedfor specific habitats • Fit well with theology

  11. Enlightenment • Dawning of new ideas, new explanations and questioning traditional thoughts

  12. Did Darwin figured it all out by himself?… NO. Each bar represents the life span of a scientist that played a key role in the development of modern evolutionary biology. (you don’t need to memorize these names…)

The First Person to Suggest Evolution was… • NOT Charles Darwin, but • Jean Baptiste Lamarck who revived a theory that existed for thousands of years • Suggested species change over time and can become new species • BUT he had no evidence, and his hypothesis did not properly explain how evolution could occur • He said…

  14. a.) Organisms acquired characteristics over their lifetime and then passed these on to offspring b) Traits are developed out of “need” c) Through use/disuse characteristics are developed.

  15. A.) This is not supported. Why? Organisms cannot pass on acquired traits. ex: A body builder does not have muscular babies B) ALSO an individual does not evolve, a population evolves.

  16. Another Big Change • Geological gradualism began to take hold • Idea that mountains formed over a very long time and the Earth was older than 6,000 years

  17. Who was Charles Darwin? (1809-1882) A. Failed as a doctor and a minister! B. 1831 – he becomes the naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle for a 5 year mapping expedition to South America. 1. naturalist: includes collecting plant & animal specimens and documenting wildlife at all stops on journey.

  18. 4.)The Galapagos Islands – chain west of Ecuador. a.) Each island has slight variations in climate as well as plant and animal life.

SIDE NOTE 2nd period! • I am planning a trip to the Galapagos Spring Break 2015. • Any JCP student can go but I’m limited to 14 participants. • This is a science trip so it is roughing it a little but you will learn about island ecology, get to take actual data on Galapagos tortoises which is HUGE because they are an endangered species and snorkel the coral reefs and cultural exchange with students that live there. You’ll see things a typical tour wouldn't see and also what a typical tour would see. • It is 12 days, you miss 2 days of school. Per day it’s cheaper than the Spain trip but it is 4 days longer so it’s more expensive and not as luxurious (I mean it’s not hotels and restaurants it’s dormitory sleeping and a camp cafeteria which I’m sure is tasty but it’s not a restaurant). The price is all inclusive. You pay only for souvenirs and stuff you want to pay for (IDK snacks?) You can pay more for college credit. • Email me if you are interested. There will be a meeting in MAY and the selection process will be done before we leave for summer assuming I have 14 participants). • YEA!!!!

  20. Darwin’s Observations • Noticed species on the islands seemed very similar (different finches on each island) • Slightly similar to mainland South American species • Very different from European species

  21. c.) Darwin eventually infers: 1. ancestral species of finch arrived on the islands from the mainland. 2. spread from island to island. 3. Each island species diverged over time into separate species based on the specific environment of each island. From this…

  22. …Charles Darwin: • Proposed a well-thought out, coherent, well-researched hypothesis • Alfred Wallace published at the same time but Darwin’s version was more complete so he gets all the credit

So… what did Darwin propose?2 Main Parts Descent with Modification Natural Selection Changes in the environment can cause populations to change over time… this is the HOW (mechanism) evolution occurs • Species change over time and become new species • Infers: All species came from one common ancestor

  24. Decent with modification implies a UNIVERSAL common ancestor. BUT does not tell us how that/those 1st organisms appeared.

  25. The “rules” of natural selection • We will explore the “rules” of natural selection by running a computer simulation called EVO DOTS • This simulation will take some time. YOU SHOULD BE ACTIVLY INVOLVED IN YOUR LEARNING…don’t just sit there and “hang out”. • Go to next slide…

  26. Instructions for Evo-Dots • stay on the computer and with the same group. Send 1 person to get a packet for each person. • read the beginning, do the histogram as quickly as possible. • once you get to the computer simulation part you’ll just need to follow the directions. • MAKE PREDICTIONS & follow in order. • “Play” with the configurations of the populations for 5 min or LESS and then get started! • Switch who is doing the clicking. • Answer the questions after discussion as a group but each person must fill out their own answer sheet. • Your should* be able to complete all the computer simulations today. • When you get to “Evolution by natural selection in the stickle backs of Lake Wapato” please log off and go back to the table and complete the rest of the packet. • If you finish all the question in the packet you can turn it in and work silently on something academically orientated (read a book, do other class work…you should not be using your phones. If you need the internet you can use a computer). • If you do not finish whatever questions are left are HW (including computer simulations*).
