  1. Physical and Chemical Changes A Write On Activity

  2. Objective: Chemical/Physical Change: Differentiate • The learner will be able to distinguish between a physical and chemical change.

  3. Examples of signs that are both Chemical & physical • Gas production (can be a phase change or a new substance) • Color change (can hold in a color like a mixture or it could be a new substance) • Heat given off (simply hotter or could be burning to give off heat) • Smell (can be expanding out or brand new from a new substance)

  4. Both of these examples are making a gas. Which one is physical and which is chemical? H2O in a liquid going into H2O as a gas is a PHYSICAL Change because it still H2O Two different chemicals are being added to create a new gas or bubbles. Like Baking Soda & Vinegar making bubbles is a CHEMICAL change

  5. Both of these pictures show a color change due to heat: which is physical and which is chemical? • Paper burning is a chemical change because it is no longer paper, but becomes ash • When metals (such as steel) heat up they glow but they are still the same substance (still steal)

  6. 1. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Sugar dissolving in tea • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  7. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  8. Correct!Physical Change

  9. 2. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Logs burning • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  10. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  11. Correct!ChemicalChange

  12. 3.Is it a chemical or physical change? • Melting an ice cube to become water. • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  13. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  14. Correct! Physical Change

  15. 4.Is it a chemical or physical change? • Cutting paper • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  16. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  17. Correct! Physical Change

  18. 5.Is it a chemical or physical change? • Crushing an aspirin • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  19. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  20. Correct! Physical Change

  21. 6. Is it a chemical or physical change? • Metal rusting • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  22. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  23. Correct! ChemicalChange

  24. 7.Is it a chemical or physical change? • Lighter fluid burning • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  25. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  26. Correct! ChemicalChange

  27. 8.Is it a chemical or physical change? • An egg rotting • Chemical Change • Physical Change

  28. OOPS! Did it change size, color, shape (Physical Change)? or Did it become different matter (Chemical Change)?

  29. Correct! ChemicalChange

  30. 9. Is it a chemical or physical change? • An egg breaking • Chemical Change • Physical Change
