  1. Welcome to Geometry! Ms. Matthews

  2. What is Geometry?

  3. Geometry: • Study of shapes • Logic • Measurements

  4. Course Descriptions: A basic goal of Geometry is to expand the understanding of mathematical concepts and to improve logical thinking skills. Students will be presented with concepts, strategies and guidance in order to improve on their own decision making ability. These concepts will be reinforced through exercises in order to gain mastery and provoke critical thinking.

  5. This is not your typical math course! It is probably going to be the first time you study for math. There is a ton of vocabulary to learn as well!

  6. Prerequisites: A passing grade in Algebra I

  7. Text(s): Geometry: McDougal Littell

  8. Supplementary Materials: • Scientific calculator • TI-30X IIS (Texas Instruments) Can’t use on tests until second half, but ok on hw & quizzes

  9. Supplementary Materials: • Geometry tool kit – protractor, compass, ruler (available at any office supply store or Target) (Required by Tuesday, June 16th)

  10. Classroom Rules/Behavioral Expectations: • Respect yourself, others and the teacher • Do not disrupt the learning process of others

  11. Classroom Rules/Behavioral Expectations: • Be prepared for each class (BRING necessary materials) • Textbook • Pencil and paper • Calculator, protractor, compass, and straightedge

  12. Classroom Rules/Behavioral Expectations: • Be on time. • No eating or drinking in the classroom, except water • Late assignments will not be accepted, one will randomly be collected daily

  13. Classroom Rules/Behavioral Expectations: • IF YOU ARE ABSENT • It is your responsibility to get the notes and make-up work complete before test day • If you are absent on test day, you must take the test BEFORE the day of the next chapter test. • Homework and Tests will receive no credit if the absence is unexcused (not cleared with the office)

  14. Course Outline/Topics Covered: • Course objectives encompass GUHSD mathematics standards • An overview of Geometry • Reasoning • Lines in a plane • Congruent triangles and properties of triangles • Polygons • Transformations • Similarity • Right triangles • Circles • Planar measurements • Space measurements

  15. Grading and Assessment Policy: 100% - 90% = A 89% - 80% = B 79% - 73% = C 72% - 68% = C- 67% = D Less than 67% = F

  16. Breakdown of Grading Categories 45% = Test 5% = Daily Quizzes 30% = Assignments/Projects 20% = Final Exam

  17. Classroom Rules/Behavioral Expectations: I look forward to working with you over the summer. Please keep in mind it is a privilege to take summer school. If you receive two referrals, you will automatically be dropped from the class. Each late counts as one point and each absence counts as two points. If you go over 5 points, you will be dropped from the class and receive no credit.

  18. Session 1: June 15-July 2 7:30- 9:55 AM Period 1 9:55-10:10 AM Break 10:10-12:30 PM Period 2 Session 2: July 6- July 24 7:30- 9:45 AM Period 1 9:45-10:00 AM Break 10:00-12:15 PM Period 2

  19. Please see me to make an appointment if you need extra help. Charlotte Matthews (619)660-3668 cmatthews@gushd.net

  20. Grades are accessible through the Steele Canyon High School website. Select Staff – Directory then select teacher’s name. Be prepared to enter your student’s ID #. Grades are updated after each test.

  22. Things about me: • I have a bachelors in Math and a masters in Education • I work a lot, and expect you to as well • I love music • I teach AP Statistics & Geometry

  23. Things about the Classroom: • I will be using PowerPoints almost daily • Calendar and agenda are in the back • Grade sheets will be sent home after each test • If you get an ‘A’ on a test, your name goes up • on the superstars board! • There will be notes and HW daily

  24. Things about the Classroom: • You will be working in groups • There will be a group quiz or individual test daily • There will be extra credit

  25. Why group work? 5% 10% 20% 30% 50% 75% 90%

  26. Bathroom Rules: • You cannot go for the first 15 minutes • of class or during notes • If someone is gone you cannot go • When you come back return the pass to me

  27. Things NOT to do: • Your phone is not a calculator • Ipods should not be used! • Cheat • Say “I will do this homework later” • Put your head down on your desk • Not come prepared to class • Go through my things without permission • Say “I don’t want to sit here”

  29. 1.1 – Identify Points, Lines, and Planes

  30. One capital letter A finite space represented by a dot. A A Point A 0 dimensions pt. A

  31. Two capital letters Through any two points, there is one line. Extends without end. m C B A 1 dimension line m

  32. Has two endpoints. Doesn’t go on forever. C B A

  33. First letter is initial point C Initial point, then continues in one direction S B A

  34. Two rays with the same initial point, but go in opposite directions C and B A

  35. Points that lie on the same line C Pts A, B, and C B A

  36. To name a plane choose 3 noncollinear points that lie on the plane. A Y Extends in all directions, forming a surface X Z Plane XYZ Or use a single letter near the corner of the diagram. 2 dimensions Plane A

  37. A Y X Points that lie on the same plane Z Pts. X, Y, and Z
