  3. Conflict • Definition: A state of disharmony between incompatible persons, ideas, or interests (a clash). • “Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional.” • Fact: Since recorded history, only 268 years without war.

Types of Conflict • Interpersonal Conflict – emotional, social, relationship, etc. • Community Conflict – group, racial, etc. • Religious – based Conflict: Islam vs. Christianity, Shiites vs. Sunni, Catholic vs. Protestant. • Ideological Conflict-democracy vs. communism. • Diplomatic Conflict-ideas of two countries • Economic Conflict-resources • Military Conflict

  5. Ways of Addressing Conflict • Accommodation – Germany before WWII. • Avoidance – England before WWII. • Collaboration – Egypt/Israel Treaty 1979. • Compromise – Armistice (end WWI). • Competition/War – World War I and II.
