  3. Windows 7 Problem • Most XP Computers Can Not Upgrade to Win7 Due to: • Old Video Chipsets • Old Sound Chipsets • Old BIOS Chipsets • Lack of Sufficient RAM (Memory) • Hard Drive Too Small • CPU Speed Too Slow

  4. Windows 7 • Windows 7 a Viable Replacement for XP • Requires at Least 6GB of Ram • Always Purchase the Pro Version of any Windows OS. Never Starter or Home. • Most Printers Purchased in the Last Three Years have Windows 7 Compatible Drivers. Older Printers will May Not Work

  5. Availability • Windows 7 Supported by Microsoft Until 2020. • Windows 7 Provides a Menu Based User Interface Similar to XP • Windows 7 May Still be Purchased From Dell at Least Through July of 2013 Probably October of 2013

  6. Windows 8 • Lack of Menu System Like XP, Vista or 7. • Learning Curve High for Technically Savvy Users. • Third Party Software Available to Restore Menu System • Corporate IT Support Waiting for Microsoft to Fix the Problems (Including User Interface) Before Adopting

  7. Purchasing Windows 8 • Always Pro Version, Never Home or Starter • At Least 6GB Ram • 3rd Party Menu Utility to Reduce Learning Curve. • Check With Court Software Vendor to Make Sure Win8 is Supported • Win8 is Normally Delivered as 64Bit • Win8 32Bit is Still Available

  8. Printers • Move From Personal (USB Connected) Printers to Ethernet Capable (not wireless). Cost Difference Less than $10.00 • Laser Printer Cheaper Per Page • Laser Printers are Available in Color • Always ask About First Page Print Time, Lower Number Means Better. Seconds do Make a Difference

  9. Cloud • Newest Buzzword • Using Someone Else’s Computers to Store Your Data • Security Risk • May Slow Down your Network and Servers • Backup Service ONLY if Using Public/Private Key Encryption

Backup • Full (Not Incremental) Data Backup at Day End • Backup Should be to a Network Accessible Storage (NAS) Device if From a Server • Backup Drive Should be Replaced Every Two Years to Prevent Data Loss Due to Failure • Flash Drives Can be Used for Backup • Subject to Data Loss if Not Handled Correctly • Rewrite Issues

Protect Your Computer • All Computers and Network Equipment Should be Plugged into a Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) • Protects against Power Brown Out • Protects against Electrical Shock During Power Outage • Replace Every Three Years • Computers should be Plugged into Power Strip with Switch and Switched OFF After Using Windows Shut Down • Sleep/Hibernate Modes Should NOT Be Used

  12. Internet Usage Employee Usage During Court Session (Phones, Tables, Etc.) Firewalls Anti-Virus Anti-Spyware
