  5. He subsequently embraced Islam and established the foundations of an empire which reached its heyday during the reign of Sultan MansorSyah

  6. BACKGROUND OF KESULTANAN MELAYU MELAKA

  7. HISTORY OF MELAKA According to the legends which have been recorded by the Malay Annals and by the Portuguese, An exciled Hindu prince who is known by the title of Parameswara from a dying kingdom of Srivijaya came to Temasik (Singapore).

  8. Killed the ruler who paid tribute to Siam and reigned there for 5 year until the Siamese drove him out. Parameswara had run to Muar to bail out attacks from Siames. Then he stood small settlement there, but he think that place is unsuitable to be set up a new kingdom.

  9. …..Parameswara and his follower have continued on until to Melaka river. Finally, he find that the place is particullary suitable for new kingdom……..

  10. WHY CHOOSE MALACCA? Parameswara choose Melaka becouse :- Near the hill and along to the river bank. A small but aggressive white mousedeer caught his attention when the mousedeer so intimidated his hunting dogs that they turned and fell into the water.

  11. The place where the weak can triumph over the strong, Parameswara decided would be a good location for a settlement

  12. FACTOR Strategic GOVERMENT ROLE OF ISLAM RELIGION Relationship with China FACILITY

  13. ROLE OF ISLAM RELIGION Parameswara converted to Islam in 1414 and changed his name to 'Raja Iskandar Shah'. In collaboration with allies from the sea-people (orang laut) the wandering proto-Malay privateers of the Straits,

  14. Parameswara established Malacca as major international port by compelling passing ships to call there, and establishing fair and reliable facilities for warehousing and trade. PORT FACILITY

  15. RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINA The development of relations between Malacca and China was at that time a strategic decision to ward off further Siamese attacks. Because of its strategic location, Malacca was an important outpost for Zheng He's spectacular exploration fleet.

  16. To enhance relations, Hang Li Po, allegedly a princess of the Ming Emperor of China, arrived in Malacca, accompanied by 500 attendants, to marry Sultan Mansor Shah who reigned from 1456 until 1477. • Her attendants married the locals and settled mostly in Bukit China (Bukit Cina).

  17. GOVERNMENT INTELLIGENCE Its initial success under the governance of a Sumatran prince and his descendants was based on the model of an old enterport called Srivijaya that ruled the straits for centuries before the 'discovery' of Malacca. There is still much debate amongst historians as to the exact period of this once great maritime empire which ruled the trading routes in the straits.

  18. STRATEGIC PLACE When Malacca was established in the 1400's, there were already 2 entrepots of importance in the Straits - both guarding the sea route along the Sumatran coasts.

  19. Parameswara consciously selected his site with great care. After a time of searching, he finally found an ideal harbour. He chose a sheltered harbour, free from mangrove swamps close to the Melaka Hill.

  20. He knew that this harbour was positioned at the convergence of the sea lanes from India and China and was sufficiently deep to allow the large vessels to anchor in the bay to wait out the monsoons. Moreover, the Melaka river had a pleasant climate and ample supply of fresh water. However, the deciding factor was that the area had a vantage point. It had a naturally defensible position
