Public Law 106-525The Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000 • A population is a health disparity population if there is a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rates in the population as compared to the health status of the general population

  3. NCMHD Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Initiative • Support intervention research • Using community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles and methods • Reduce and eliminate health disparities

  4. NCMHD Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Initiative : 3 Phases • Phase One: Planning (3 years) • Partnership development • Community needs assessment • Identification of disease/condition • Intervention methodology planning • Pilot intervention

NCMHD Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Initiative : 3 Phases • Phase Two: Intervention (5 years) • Development of logic model/conceptual framework, research design, and methodology • Development of rigorous evaluation plans • Full implementation of intervention • Evaluation study • Planning of dissemination

NCMHD Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Initiative : 3 Phases • Phase Three: Dissemination (3 years) • Provided to grantees from Phase II who have demonstrated effective interventions • Disseminate research findings in an effort to improve the health status of underserved populations and eliminate health disparities

  7. Hispanic/Latino Subpopulations included in NIMHD CBPR Projects • Indigenous Mexican Farmworkers • Caribbean Latinos/as • Border populations • Males • Children • Southwest, Pacific, Northeast

  8. Diseases/conditions addressed through NIMHD CBPR projects • Obesity • Diabetes • HIV • Pesticide Exposure • Cardiovascular Disease • Metabolic Syndrome
