  7. Fakes & phantom domains Fact: characters, hyphens, numbers are loved by bad registrants.

  8. Fake webshops • offer high-end branded products at amazing prices • clothes, sneakers, handbags and sunglasses • buy and might get…. Might…… Disrupting the abuse

We have a tool developed for us by InternetNZ Research • semi-automated web crawling + text mining + machine learning. • It crawls web content and alerts us to a possible fake webshop. • Features of fake webshops • usually registration of expired domain names • domains with no relation to the content e.g. alexboat.co.nz selling sunglasses. Fake webshop algorithm

  10. 5–35 domains registered a week are flagged by our fake webshop algorithm Tell us if you see a suspicious looking.nz domain abuse@dnc.org.nz

Safer online shopping tips: • overseas businesses can use a .nz • $20 Gucci sunglasses are probably not Gucci • our Whois + company office search can tell you if the seller may be genuine • be wary of: • sites that don’t have a physical address — use Google Maps • don’t have return policies • goods are really cheap • sites with bad grammar/machine translation • strange combinations of goods and services • URL’s that don’t match the products: Bob’s fishing site selling women’s shoes. Safe online shopping
