  1. What is Platinum? Mandisa Keswa

  2. What Are Elements? • Definition: • A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, which is the number of protons in its nucleus. • I will be presenting the structure, history, and importance of Platinum.

  4. What is the structure of Platinum? • Platinum is a silvery, odorless solid • It has 78 electrons and protons, and it has 117 neutrons. • Atomic weight: 195.08 • Atomic number: 78 • Symbol: Pt

  5. What is the history of Platinum? • Platinum was discovered in 1755 • It was discovered by Julius Ceaser Scaliger • Men called conquistadors found grains of unknown metal • They found out Platinum was very expensive and rare • That’s how Platinum became a metal that everybody wanted • Was also found in South Africa and Russia

  6. Why is Platinum important? • Platinum is and was used a lot in America • Compounds of Platinum are used to treat cancer • Also, it was used in 1400 BC for decorations to the Egyptians, and widely in South America • Platinum, palladium and rhodium produced are used in vehicle emission technology • Platinum is used in glassmaking equipment • Investing in platinum may be done in the future

  7. Interesting Facts • Platinum is used to make jewelry settings • Platinum is one of the densest metals • It is rarer and more expensive than gold • Teams up with Cisplatin to make a substance that helps fight cancer • This precious metal is highly valued for its beauty and purity • Platinum’s color, strength, hardness and resistance to tarnish are its advantages

  8. Conclusion I learned… • Platinum is highly useful and highly expensive • Used as many types of substances people want to make money • Needs to be invested for future uses • Very different atomic structure than most elements • Has a very high demand in America • Has been used a lot during the past, present, and future
