The phase or state of matter What causes the phase change that takes place? How does the molecular arrangement change?
Matter has properties • Texture matter can be rough or smooth • Shape matter can be round, square etc • Temperature matter can react to heat • Flammability matter can support a flame • Color matter can display a color or have no color at all With your group members, name samples of matter found in the classroom. Make a chart that organizes your information
The building blocks of matter are called ELEMENTS --Elements are arranged in an organized group of information known as the Periodic Table of Elements With your group, write a distinguishing sentence for each of the main groups found on the Periodic Table. Hint- use colors as your guide.
Periodic Table of Elements • More than 100 elements. Arranged according to increasing atomic mass. • Rows are horizontal and called “period.” Think of a period that comes at the end of a horizontal sentence • Family or groups are vertical. These groups all have same valence electron • Atomic Number is the # of protons in a nucleus. • Atomic weight is the # of protons and neutrons.
Student Work With your group, write a distinguishing sentence for each of the main groups found on the Periodic Table. Hint- use colors as your guide. With your group, complete the following WB pages 5-10 Text questions Page 23 #1-4 Page 29 # 1-3 Page 35 # 1-3 WB pages 29-40
