Background • Eminem’s real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. • He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 17, 1972 to Debbie Briggs-Mathers and Marshall Bruce Mathers II. • Eminem began lip-synching at the age of 4, rapping at the age of 14, and became well known for his abilities at the age of 17.

  3. History • Eminem’s mom was unable to maintain a stable environment for him. He was consistently on the move between Missouri, Detroit, and Michigan, changing schools as he went. • Although he struggled in the majority of his classes, he had a passion for literature. Constantly reading everything from comic books to the dictionary, Eminem loved the idea of expanding his vocabulary. • After failing the ninth grade three times, Eminem dropped out at the age of 17. • Playing with the words in his name, he came up with the stage name “M&M,” where it later evolved into Eminem.

  4. 1995-1997 • Eminem released his first album, Infinite, only selling 1000 copies. • He received his daughter, Hailie Jade Scott, from his wife Kim. • Eminem participated in the Rap Olympics in LA, going for the 1,500 dollar prize, but did not win. Through the Olympics he was discovered by Interscope records. • This year, Dr. Dre helped him with career and second album, The Slim Shady LP.

  5. 1999-2000 • Eminem was sued by his mother, Deborah Mathers, for $10 million in a defamation lawsuit. He ended up settling with his mother for $25,000. • Eminem took a spot in in the underground Detroit rap “battles”. He proved his skill and gained enormous respect for his rap abilities. • Eminem released his third album, TheMarshall Mathers LP, with the help of Dr. Dre once more. This album included artists, Dre, Snoop Dogg, X-Zibit, Nate Dogg, D-12, and Dido. The album won three Grammys and was “Album of the Year”. • He filed for divorce from his wife, Kim.

  6. 2001-2004 • Eminem connected with a few of his old friends from Detroit to form the group D12. • Eminem was sentenced to 2 years of probation, for the use of weapons. • Him and Kim, got back together for their daughter, and then got divorced again, but it was Kim who wanted it this time. • Starred in the movie “8 Mile,” based on his life. • Eminem released a new solo album titled, The Eminem show. • Eminem produced Encore.

  7. Recently • After he produced Encore, Eminem put a hold on music for about 7 years. • After abusing drugs and alcohol, Eminem made a comeback in his music career, producing the albums, Relapse and Recovery.

  8. When I’m Gone • 0:00-0:05 Intro-Short intro with music box sound that establishes mood of song. No beat. • 0:06-0:58 Orchestral strings and beat are put in along with rap lyrics from artist. • 0:59-1:23 Chorus with partial singing by artist. Hook. • 1:24-2:15 Rap section with lyrics that are variations of the background beat. Aggressive tone to artists voice when rapping. • 2:16-2:40 Chorus. • 2:41-4:11 Rap section. The Real Slim Shady • 0:00-0:16 Intro- Opening beat and introduction to melody and lyrics. • 0:17-1:12First rap section with continuation of melody in the background with lyrics that the artist uses to display subject of matter in song. • 1:13-1:27Chorus. With hook. • 1:28-2:07Return of rap section with simple rhythm. • 2:08-2:23Chorus. • 2:24-3:03Third rap section continuation of lyrical story telling with simple beat. • 3:04-3:36Chorus.3:37-4:10Melody from introduction has variations that fade out as the song concludes. • Follows basic outlines of a typical rap/ hip-hop song with 3 verses and 2 chorus sections. Only musical aspects of song are in the melody and beat that are played throughout the entire song with occasional singing from artist during chorus.
