  1. Arthur Miller Playwright of The Crucible

  2. Early Life • Born in New York City in 1915 • Parents were successful but were financially ruined by the depression • Decided to become a writer after reading The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky when he got out of high school

  3. College • Miller attended the University of Michigan, where he won national awards for journalism. He graduated in 1938.

  4. After College • Miller went to work writing for both CBS and NBC • Was not drafted into World War II because of a football injury • Married his college sweetheartand had two children

  5. Focus of his Plays • Miller often portrayed how families are destroyed by false values. This was especially true of his early works, including Death of a Salesman, which made him famous. It focused on an unsuccessful salesman who kills himself so the family could collect the insurance money.

  6. The Crucible • Miller wrote The Crucible in response to the HUAC hearings on Communism. Miller felt that the country was on a “witch hunt” for Communists, of which he was accused of being, and the story was an allegory for McCarthyism and the mass hysteria that ensued. Just like in Salem in 1692: Accusation=Guilt

  7. The Hook • In 1953, Miller was going to Belgium to promote The Cruciblewhen the United States government decided not to issue him a passport. The reason: The FBI read his play The Hook about a militant union organizer and was afraid he was going to speak out against the government.

  8. Later Years • Miller kept writing up until his death • He stayed politically active throughout his life. • He was married to Marilyn Monroe, and until his death of heart failure in 2005, he had fresh roses sent to her grave twice a week
