Peace between Rome and Carthage, 201 BCE • Carthage • retained her local autonomy, lost her voice in her own foreign affairs, was forced to restore to the community deserters • lost part of North Africa • fleet reduced to 10 ships but allowed to retain elephants • forced to pay 200 talents per year for 50 years(!) and hand over 100 hostages • Rome • acquired Spain and its resources, reacquired Sicily, suppressed opposition from Carthage for the next 50+ years, and allowed her to focus on northern Italy • within 20 years, controls all of the western Mediterranean What’s next?
