The floating zone furnace (shown below at left) is used to grow large crystals needed for property measurement and applications (eg SHG active materials for photonic technologies).

A single crystal of Cu2O measuring 1 cm in diameter and 4 cm long is shown at right. Single crystals of Cu2O allow analysis of 3rd harmonic generation (shown below) and exciton behavior.
